Dr. Diarist rarely spills on his mountain bike, but this one was a doozy. His brand new pedals, beautifully spiked with sharp pins all around, ripped his shin open on a Memorial Day weekend ride.
Trip One to the ER, on Saturday, was to get it stitched. Trip Two, on Monday, was to get the infection treated. Trip Three was to REI this week to replace the pedals with something less lethal. Those socks? Why, yes, Dr. Diarist is wearing Argyll socks (just not on the right bicycle!)

This also why many cyclists try to ride in the big chainring….less chewing up of the leg in a fall.
The chainring might have done less damage!
Sorry to hear about the mishap.
Hope he feels better soon.
I have a Shimano MTB pedal on my Thorn, which has those pegs.
I haven’t use them yet, but I bet they can do a number of my shin too.
You know, I think 510 MTN bike shoes with Stealth Rubber might be something to consider.
Peace :)
Good suggestion, Chandra. He’s going to take a look at them; I think he’s probably not going to be willing to use pegged pedals again, but he would like some way to get a decent grip while riding. (Happily, the infection has gone and the leg is healing beautifully.)
Nice leg

Funny, Saul! I am considering trying to find him a Michelin suit; I think that may be the only answer!
BMX body armor

I’m thinking full body armor if he makes a habit of this, Saul! (PS — I’m amazed at the protective gear available these days!)
